Is our Bhelpuri Hygienic?

681x454Bhelpuri is one of the favourite food for many of our city dwellers. This easily available food has attracted all type of our population. From students to corporate people consider it as a part of our life. We may surprised to see how a food conquered minds of a whole city. A spicy hot Behlpuri is enough to refresh our mind. Thus Bhelpuri is easily available in throughout the city. At every railway station, bus stand or even circles presence of the Bhelpuri makes our city spicy.

But in a recent study done by social activists of Human Welfare Association says most of our city Bhelpuri is unhygienic in nature. The startling fact points towards the need to control our food vendors in order to avoid food poisoning or such dangerous events, as happened in many parts of our country. The organisation started its investigation after food poisoning reported in many parts of the city.

The study found that Bhelpuri vendors who sell their food on streets and other populated area use very unhygienic place to store food materials. During the investigation, food materials found stored in public toilets and near to garbage depositing areas. Food served by these people are mostly kept in open air for more than 3 to 4 days. Such food materials can cause food poisoning and affects one’s body. These street vendors use unclean hands to serve their food materials.

Ragunathan Nair, president of Human Welfare Association, said “we love street vendors and their foods. They are more spicy and cheap. But we will never take back these foods, if we really understand the behind scene. Bhelpuri is one of the worst affected food. Due to its popularity among the people, street vendors are rising to reach this demand. Though it is a profitable business, irresponsible attitude will only result in degrading our society.

When contacted, NMMC officials acknowledged that they don’t have a post of health inspector or a department to control such activities, as in other municipalities.

It is almost impossible to imagine that the street food can be hygienic. The videos of the food being made (on YouTube) show the vendors frequently dipping their hole hands in the tamarind water! They then use the same hand to wash the dishes and handle raw food.

Mind you, my friend when she was visiting Delhi managed to get food poisoning eating Bhel Puri from a proper restaurant in Delhi Mall. She went there because she was scared of getting food poisoning from street vendors!
