Sikhs observe the 407th martyrdom day of their fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev.

Guru_ArjanCBD Belapur, 12 June 2013: Sikh devotees in the city observed the 407th martyrdom day of their fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev on June 12. Sikh believers came to the road side and supplied vegetarian food (langar) and cold juice (shabil) in different parts of the city. Guru Arjan Devji was martyred on 1606 and laid a dark chapter in the Sikh religion. But remembering the day of martyrdom of their fifth guru believers takes initiatives to feed those needy people of our society. Everyone can get vegetarian food from the stalls installed by Sikh organizations or Gurudwara in various parts of the city.

The institution of the Sikh langar, or free kitchen, was started by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. It was designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status, a revolutionary concept in the caste-ordered society of 16th-century India where Sikhism began. In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness of all humankind. “…the Light of God is in all hearts.”

The Sikhs pray: Loh langar tapde rahin (May the hot plates of the langar remain ever in the service). They have also served Shabil a sweet water was distributed from stalls all the day to help needy in our society.

Gurubux Singh, Chairman of Panjabi Cultural and welfare association, Belapur, said “Though this day is a dark chapter in the Sikh history, people from our religion serves the community with love and affection to humanity the very teaching of our religion by serving langar and shabil to those needy in our society. We use this day to propagate the idea of equality among the humanity and peace in our world.”
