Civic issues, Features and Personalities of Navi Mumbai
The change of climate accelerates changes in our city and its societies. Many functions and commodities of our society depend on climate and its changes. Many people migrated to our city during summer season for different businesses are going back to their home and home towns. As the first drop of rain hit our city, announcing the arrival of the monsoon and saying good bye for summer, our society is also witnessing some changes and travelling.
We call it as reverse migration, as tribal who gave us sweet wild mangoes and Jambul, merchants who brought varieties mangos and other fruits, villagers who provide sweet sugarcane juice during summer, are slowing disappearing from the city.
Tribal people are playing a crucial role in protecting and providing wild fruits for our city during summer season. Many tribal people are involved in protecting mango gardens in Panvel and nearby areas. During mango season of summer and much earlier they came here in mango garden and protecting the mango gardens from external disturbances. They make a temporary shelter under some mango trees to protect themselves. As mango seasons are over many tribal are going back to their homes in wild areas or to villages, where they live in communities.
Tribal women who live in villages near to Panvel are involved in selling Jambul during summer season in our city. These women are slowly disappearing from our city, as they leaving city to their homes near to forests and villages where they live in communities. We are also witnessing the merchants, who sold different fruits including varieties of mangoes during monsoon are leaving the city to their home towns. They are seasonal merchants, visits our city to sell their products and fruits and go back to the home during monsoon.
Many villagers in Panvel Taluka also visit our city to sell sugarcane juice during summer. They use a machine made of wood and operated by hand to take the juice from the sugarcane. Residents will fully support that these juice is sweeter and clean than those use electronic machines. They are disappearing from our city, as first drops of rains hit our city.
Abdul Rehman, a merchant of Panvel, said “Every summer we see a migration of people into Panvel for various business. But first drop of water has let them disappear them from the city. They provide as many things including wide varieties of fruits and other products. They will come back according to climatic changes and selling different fruits, sweet mangoes and Jambul. We hope they come back soon.”
