Civic issues, Features and Personalities of Navi Mumbai
First drops of this monsoon season hit our city. In coming days rains will get the strength and transform our lives. Many are praying for good rains, as this will provide enough water for our city. Many are determined to enjoy the rainy season, as rains bring joy. But for the many, rainy season is a time of experiments and experiences. Poor sections of the society are most affected due to the problems created by monsoon and rains. When rain hit our soil, it decreases hot and become cool. But for many rains are not cool, as the rainy season will make them sweat due to fear.
Every monsoon comes with not only joy but also fear of another disaster. Slum dwellers of Panvel have started repairing their unstable roofs, as rains could damage their shelter very badly. Some are covering their roofs with big plastic covers. Others are placing big stones over their shelter for strength. Every monsoon they are involved in different innovations and inventions, not impress anyone but to protect their families from rains, thunders, lightening and other problems of monsoon.
Every monsoon they design their weak shelters to direct flow of rain into canals and nullahs. For this they uses small plastic covers, bottles, broken pieces of sheets, glass and many things we consider as solid waste. Floods are another reason for slum dwellers to fear and sweat, as Panvel once witnessed such in a drastic amount. Important slums in Panvel are now engaged in creating the path for water to flow smoothly to avoid any accumulation in their area.
Monsoon season will be more difficult, as rains can affect their daily bread. Many constructions and works will be put on hold due to heavy rains. Many builders are completing their woks of this season and will be discontinued from June 15. Rains won’t allow people who work for daily wages to find their bread, due to the shortage in works and jobs. Thus every monsoon is a time of experiments and painful experience for those poor sections of people.
Some temporary shelter builds in vacant spaces of Panvel are found to be vacated, due to weakness and tendency to fall down in rains. Many such people are now search for a place of shelter to protect themselves from rains. Some people have found shelter in vacant spaces under bridges. Thus infrastructure development is providing shelter for some poor people.
Mandar Madav, a resident of Panvel said “Truly monsoon gives difficulties to our lives. We found difficult to found jobs. We have to repair our weak homes and found good roofs. Every monsoon gives a chance for flood, so we keep our premises clean and make the flow of water smooth. We know starving days are coming”
