Civic issues, Features and Personalities of Navi Mumbai
Panvel city is growing in terms of its population, potential and economically. Municipal administration has to upgrade the services and amenities according to the growing needs in the city. Urban transport is one of the basic services a municipality can offer to its residents other than water supply, health service, education and garbage disposal facilities. Public transport system is very necessary in a city, if the radius of the city is wide and huge. Though Panvel is a growing city with lakhs of population and a major region in MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region), still it does not have an urban transport system. In the city limits one has to depend on auto rickshaws for commuting.
Autowallas operate according to their whims and fancies as there is no meter system and a proper auto rickshaw tariff in Panvel city. So an ordinary citizen find it difficult to access, colleges, schools, administrative offices. For many, commuting in a rickshaw is an expensive affair in Panvel city. New Panvel police station and DCP office are far from Panvel railway station and ST bus stand. Hundred of villages are under the jurisdiction of these police stations. Villagers who come by ST buses or share rickshaws find it difficult to go to DCP office and New Panvel police station. They have to either walk or shell out an expensive sum for rickshaw ride.
For the last two years Senior Citizen Organization (Jyesht Nagarik Sangh) has been demanding a ring-route mini bus service connecting New Panvel land old Panvel. They have been following the matter persistently as senior citizens are the worst sufferers in the absence of a public transport system in Panvel. Recently they have sent a letter to Raigad Guardian Minister Sunil Tatkare demanding a public transport system in Panvel at the earliest. Guardian minister in turn asked NMMC officials to study the feasibility of the project.
New Panvel has a huge population which includes students and working class. Since the area and the adjoining villages are into a fast paced development mode, the population is drastically increasing which in turn over burdens the exiting transport infrastructure of the city. Most of the residents have to go to old Panvel for accessing ST buses, Tehsil office, court, police stations and other offices. Most of these offices are located in old Panvel which is far from railway station and ST bus stand. Since there is no public transport system, one has to hire a rickshaw and shell out a big amount for the ride.
Women, senior citizens and students are being exploited by autowalas as the rickshaws run without meter. Minimum Rs 50 to Rs 60 has to be paid for a ride of four kilometers. If there is no money, one has to walk such a long distance. That’s why Senior Citizens’ Organization demand a mini bus service which can be convenient and economical for residents. “I find it difficult to go to New Panvel police station and court which are situated in old Panvel as there is no public vehicles towards the area. I have to hire a rickshaw for which in need to pay double charge,” said Suresh Mathare, a resident of Karanjade village.
