When developments named Panvel as the future city, damage in human resource management compelled more people to chose home in slums. The increase in the number of slums shows failure of slum redevelopment or rehabilitation written in papers of Panvel Municipality. Slums are mushrooming in various open spaces and public areas due limited space in current areas. Area under and near to New bridge witnessed a rapid increase in slums. Unhygienic living conditions and solid waste disposal in important roads have disturbed the developments in the city.
The Panvel Post is tracing various elements led to the increase of slums and its effects on the future city.
Primarily slums are result of increasing population and their incapability to find the source of money according to price rise in the city. When workers and labours from different parts came for job, they are not able to rent or own a room that fit into their pocket. Thus people are compelled to live in much low rated rooms in slums. Number of people lives per room has also got increased due to the unavailability of space. Sex rackets working based in the slums of the city is interested developing their business and rooting around the city.
Slums are becoming a safe haven for antisocial activities, as informed by a source inside the slums. Slums already have their own groups and political support, which makes them protected against any attempt to their areas. Solid wastes and waste water produced in the slums often flows near to roads and irks travellers. Formation of small open canals carrying waste water has also increased the problems. This has also increased many health problems in the slums as well as the city.
Open spaces and unattended areas are slowly turning into areas of slums. Residents near to the area blame the inactive authorities, even when slums continuing to grab spaces. When building the new bridge, authorities have understood the heat of slum dwellers, as they made heavy impediments on the construction of the bridge. One side of the road built near to the bridge, in order take vehicles easily into the city is not finished due to opposition from slum dwellers. If not managed well, increasing slums could affect other construction and developments in the city.
Ashraf Khan, a resident in heart of Panvel, said “number of slums is increasing heavily in the city. This may be due to increase of construction and developments in the city. Many are attracted towards the city due to hype given by media. Officials have to take some steps to curb the slums and illegal activities happening in the city.”
Shantaram Upaye, administrative officer of Panvel Municipality, said we understood the problem and taking enough steps to avoid hurdles in the path of development. Municipality has separated a good amount of money for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers.
