The World Health Organization set the 8th of May each year as the World Thalassemia Day in order to raise awareness of this disease, how to avoid it, and how it is transmitted.
Thalassemia basically means anemia, a genetic blood disease which the child could inherit if one or both of his/her parents is carrying the disease gene. The risk is higher if both parents have this disease. Symptoms are not visible, but it can be identified through medical tests. This disease cause decrease in the amount of hemoglobin in the blood, which may eventually cause death for a person. Thus a Thalassemia patient has to take the blood transfusion every month to keep them alive. In this process one has to take a particular amount of blood, which has got government concessions.

Complete curing of the disease is only possible by a bone marrow transplantation, which is very expensive and happens only in 3 places of India. Since treatments are a huge process, the whole family will be affected by the disease.
A group of doctors in the pediatric department of MGM hospital and social workers decided to celebrate this day with those affected and provide them with essential awareness about the disease.
