Panvel is a city of long history and importance in the state and is expected grow more due to its strategic location. It’s a wonder that Panvel does not have a proper waste water management or system. Placing strong impediments towards the developments in the city, filthy nallahs carrying waste water irks its residents. Many complaints are given over the filthiness and need to clean the canals. Most of this water is flowing towards river and making the water resources filthier. Residents are blaming the irresponsible officials and arguing to manage filth water and mixing it with river water.
The net of canals carrying waste water is spread over the city in different width and length according to the population. Narrow canals situated near to roads and streets are often a nightmare for pedestrians, as it causes many accidents in the city. Narrow open canals are often found to be blocked, as a suitable place to throw waste materials and making the residential areas filthy. Dwellers of slums are the most affected, as in congested areas waste water flows between each rooms and evokes many health problems.
These nallahs are playing a crucial role in spreading diseases among the city dwellers, as it gives accommodation for mosquitoes and other diseases spreading insects. Residents points out the problems that could affect the city in a long run, if officials continue to remain silent about these canals. The filthy smell that covers the nearby areas makes the life in old Panvel miserable.
Most of these canals are open to public and paves way for filthy exposure to the residents. Most of these open canals are near to residential areas causing various problems for resident. “We need at least clean premises, as our windows give filthy smell and visuals of nallahs. Our relatives found it hard to stay in our homes, as nearby by canals produce great amount of mosquitoes” said a resident of Panvel.
Sanu Mathew, a resident of Panvel, said “PMC has separated good amount of money for beautification of ponds, lakes and other water resources in the city. It has to pay a close attention to its waste water or it will lead to severe problems in health sector as well as infrastructure of the city.”
Keshav Shinde, Engineer of Panvel Municipality, said “The municipality has placed a good amount of money for managing waste water and canals. Municipality is working for solution by building new drainage system in the city. Soon the problems will be over.”
