In 1943 from the district of Kannur in Kerala Ahmed Haji and his cousin came to Mumbai to find their destiny in the financial city of India. They started it as a small tea shop and get flourished in the village. Now as a part of the Navi Mumbai city, the hotel is sharing a legacy of its taste, smell and dedication with The Panvel Post. M.A. Zubair, current owner of the hotel, feels satisfied in servicing the society for more than 70 years. “Easy to fill stomach, but to fill the heart of those eating needs dedication” said Zubair.
Ahemd Haji and his cousin brought Padikal named from Kannur, known as Ustad, who started making the famous Biriyani. Padikal Mamad was a genius in making Biriyani, as his secret mixture of ingredients becomes famous and used by many today. Old people who witnessed the growth of famous Biriyani, shares the legacy of Ustad and his style of making Biriyani. The legacy has now handed over to the next generation of Zubair, who tells the unique story enthusiastically.
With the developments of Navi Mumbai, national hotel has also grown to glory with famous Biriyani as a special item. In 1970’s 80’s and 90’s hotel went to the heights of glory and bring many VIPs and celebrities to Taloja. Mustafa, a close aide of the hotel, 70 years old, “almost all actors of 1980 visited the hotel and they were like mad to the taste and fragrance of Biriyani. Those names include Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini and Shatrughan Sinha” said Mustafa.
The taste of this special Biriyani was mind blowing and attracted people even from Delhi, Kolkata, Goa and even outside India. Amitabh Bachchan recently on his reality show, KBC, showed interest to visit and taste the Biriyani. This hotel had made a profound impact on the culture and characteristics of the city. Now the name famous Biriyani is more applicable than Taloja or Kalamboli. Old people still remember the legacy of the hotel and the traffic congestion caused due to film stars and political leaders who visits here.
Zubair claims that the taste of Biriyani cannot be copied, as he use high quality ingredients and a unique mixture for Biriyani. We use fire from the woods, not from cooking gas even after the modernization of the hotel, which plays a huge role in the taste and fragrance of Biriyani. The high quality ingredients used in the special mixture of Biriyani make its fragrance more attractive.
The old building of the hotel is threatened, as the roads near to the building are expected to be developed. So Zubair is planning to reconstruct his hotel according to the developments of roads.
