Civic issues, Features and Personalities of Navi Mumbai
Panvel, the corridor for the Konkan region holds many transport importance in Navi Mumbai. The recent developments put tick to the growth of Panvel as a future city. As a junction between important cities, transportation facilities of the city are expected to grow enormously. The railway station is expected to have many more platforms and trains. Transportation through roadways is increasing and expected to multiply by many times.
But Panvel city shows many hurdles and impediments in the expected growth, due to its low infrastructure. Old Panvel has become the most congested area in whole Navi Mumbai. Traffic problems in the city are increasing day by day. This has contributed many other problems and will stop further growth, if authorities remain blind.
The increasing population of the city demands broad roads and better traffic controlling. Traffic rules are neglected by many travellers and residents. Narrow road in front of the Panvel Police Station is designed as one way and have a board to guide vehicles. But vehicles use to ignore those boards and travel both sides. It has created a crucial traffic even at the Police Station.
Earlier, the most congested area of Panvel was the junction in front of the ST bus stand, as vehicles from the city and those crossing Panvel met here to create a mess. Thanks to the newly constructed flyover, this reduced 90% of traffic here. But the roads and junctions inside old Panvel is still congested, especially, in peak hours of the evening.
Illegal parking is another problem that triggers the traffic congestion. As per the comments of residents, Traffic police are not so active in avoiding illegal parking and fining them. Many “NO Parking” sign boards are installed in various parts of the city but for vain, as plenty of vehicles are parked down to such boards. These parking decreased the space available for moving vehicles and created unwanted problems.
Sruthi Kumar, a resident of Panvel, said “it is dangerous to travel through the roads of Panvel. I had to wait for several minutes to cross even a small distance in the city. Illegal parking is the crucial problem. Lot of space on the roads is lost through this. If we avoid such illegal parking, major traffic could be decreased.”
Aaqib, a resident of Panvel, Traffic police are not so active in the city, as Traffic congestion in important junctions like Shivaji Chowk and Tapal Naka are commonly seen. Due to the narrow roads, several rules are implemented, but only remain in Sign boards and papers.
Eapen, a resident of Panvel, said “New Panvel has also started suffering traffic congestion in important circles due to increase in number of vehicles running. Old Panvel has become an unsolvable problem for authorities. Better services from traffic authorities are expected.”
Police Inspector and in charge of Panvel Traffic, Mohan Patil, said “we are taking every precaution to avoid Traffic congestion in Old Panvel. Illegal parking will be punished and take more steps to implement it. Residents should understand the limitations and help us to minimize traffic.”
