Civic issues, Features and Personalities of Navi Mumbai
Designed and constructed by Cidco, Navi Mumbai roads are famous for accommodating a large number of vehicles without much traffic congestion. Wide roads and numerous flyovers played a crucial role in bringing down traffic problems in the city. Due to these traffic free roads, Navi Mumbai got greater attention and investments in its infrastructure.
New Panvel tells a different story, as many of the important circles and junctions are jammed with traffic. Comparatively new town, New Panvel has also had wide clean roads to accommodate huge traffic. It has also provided alternative roads to reach the same destinations. But some factors inside the town contributed to traffic congestion in the town.
Parking on both sides of the road even during peak hours has decreased the road space available for vehicles to move. Roads near to the railway station are narrowed, due to these illegal parking. Parking of Cars and other big vehicles have contributed heavily to these traffic congestions. During peak hours of evening, conditions of this place will become even worse, as Long queues of rickshaws disturb the traffic.
The road that leads railway commuters on the main road has become extremely insufficient to accommodate the large number of Rickshaws, vehicles and commuters together. Hawkers in the area are accelerating the traffic problems, as pedestrians are forced to walk on roads. Allotting more area for parking, removing hawkers from the area and punishment for illegal parking could minimize the traffic congestion of the City.
Traffic congestion in HDFC circle situated near to the flyover connecting Old Panvel and New Panvel has become a crucial problem. This area is vital due to its connectivity to old Panvel and a commercial area. This circle is surrounded by many important banks, hospitals and commercial buildings. Traffic jams have become a common scene in evenings of this circle.
A straight road that covers Sec 8, 9, 10 & 11 of New Panvel, which connects Khanda Colony (New Panvel West) with Main parts of New Panvel East, suffers huge traffic congestions. This happens due to the illegal parking in roads and a vegetable market created by hawkers in the footpaths.
Residents complain the inefficiency of authorities to control these traffics, even in the important junctions of the town.
Susan David, a resident of Panvel, said “Traffic problems in the city are increasing day by day. Most of the problems can be solved, if there is a political will to remove illegal parking and by allotting better accommodation for hawkers.”
Raju P. J., a resident of Panvel, said “we are unhappy with the traffic police, as they can’t properly control the traffic and vehicles. Please take proper actions to avoid unnecessary problems and be more responsible.”
Police Inspector and in charge of Panvel Traffic, Mohan Patil, said “we are taking every precaution to avoid Traffic congestion in Old Panvel. Illegal parking will be punished and take more steps to implement it. Residents should understand the limitations and help us to minimize traffic.”
