Civic issues, Features and Personalities of Navi Mumbai
Though located a bit beyond Navi Mumbai, Panvel has attracted attention as a new town. But, Panvel residents have a big worry ahead of that. For long, the residents have been raising their voices for the beautification of the ponds near them. Two important lakes in the city are facing critical problems and neglected by its authorities.
Panvel Muncipality Lake (Hazrat Karam Ali Shah), creating health problems and disturbance for its residents, due to garbage dubbing, though it is located in front to Panvel Muncipality. This lake holds lot of importance due to its proximity to municipal buildings, mosques, playground and garden. Residents blame authorities and authorities in turn blame residents.
50% of garbages inside the lake are Vadapavs, which are thrown by residents forfishes in it. Health department authorities blame the activities of residents whothrows different wastes such as plastic, food materials, flowers and even humanwaste, which makes the lake filthy. A sign board to restrict garbage dubbing is not present in the vicinity now.
As a crucial spot near to the municipal building, people found it very disturbing andchallenged irresponsibility of the authorities.
Panvel Market Lake (Krishna Lake), another important lake in Panvel, remains in ruins due to garbage dubbing and ignored by civic officials. Located in Tapal Naka, the lake is near to New Municipal Corporation building, Police station, Tehsil office and market. Plastic and degrading wastes inside the lake creates a crucial health problem and produces an unpleasant smell around the area. As it’s situated in front of municipal main building and neglected for a long time, residents and shop owners near the area demand immediate actions.
Sachin Peter, a resident of Panvel, said “Beautification of ponds is crucial in a developing town like Panvel. State of water bodies that situated even in the heart of the town is pathetic, as they are filled with waste materials. Authorities of the townshould be more vigilant and take actions to avoid health problems.”
K. P. Eapen, a resident of Panvel, “Cleaning of ponds and lakes comes only in paper. Authorities never tried to pick garbage out of it. Look at lake in Tapal Naka; it has never been clean by civic officials, we residents only near to the area suffer.”
Health Department (sanitation) is responsible for cleaning the Lakes. Health inspector (head of the department), Dileep Kadam, said “We clean the lakes twice every month, but are not able to stop residents from throwing waste into lakes. Residents should avoid throwing waste in water bodies, but put it in the bins allotted for this purpose. We will collect it from there.”
