Footpaths meant for pedestrians near to the Nerul railway station on the west side, is occupied by hawkers. Selling meat, fish, all types of vegetables and fruits in a large scale, just in front of a notice board placed by CIDCO, ‘HAWKERS FREE ZONE’ . These markets are very active after six in the evening, as they will get maximum customers due to peak hours. It creates an unwanted confusion in the streets, as railway commuters and pedestrians choose to walk through streets and vehicles find it difficult to pass the area. This is also bringing pollution in the area, as these vendors are not putting waste materials in the dustbin. Waste materials of vegetables, fishes and meats create the area more unreachable for
CIDCO officials promised to take necessary proper actions, as residents dwelling near the station feel to take some immediate actions against illegal developments of markets in foot paths. These markets are increasing day by day and spreading into other areas of Nerul as well.
Vishali Gupta, staying near to the railway station. “I feel angry to see such illegal invasion into public areas, as it’s making a nuisance in surrounding areas. It has become a routine seen of illegal hawkers run with coconuts and vegetables to hide, when municipality authorities come to check these areas.” Bablu Patel, a vegetable vendor, said that “this is the best place to sell our vegetables, as everyone needs to pass this area, and can attract customers easily.”
A fish selling aunty, who won’t like to reveal her name, put forth an argument that we also want to eat food just as others have it.
Even though these illegal markets are stumbling blocks for pedestrians and nearby residents, some also feel that these hawkers are good for them. Shops nearby are now supporting these markets due to their marketing strategies. Ramesh sutar, a grocery shopkeeper near to railway station observed that “these small markets are bringing profits to other shops near to it, as it attracting customers for them as well.” Naveen Purohit, a textile shop owner feels that removing these markets will create more woes for the public, as most railway commuters depend on these markets due to proximity and CIDCO officials should take wise decisions, with a better alternative for the markets.
Mohan Ninave, PRO of CIDCO, assured that “we will seriously look into the issue as we got complaint and take necessary actions according to it. We are also planning for a space where we could accommodate those road sellers.”
